As responsible citizens, we share in the
international community's concern about the need to limit
the impact of war on civilian populations, particularly when
the battle is over and hazardous unexploded ordnance (UXO)
remains.
At
Textron Defense Systems, we are committed to producing intelligent products that
meet governments' military needs while at the same time eliminating the threat
to civilians following armed conflict. We make good on our commitment through
the use of advanced technology to design and build weapons that precisely focus
on a combat target, engage that target with the least amount of force necessary,
and leave clean battlefields. This includes our CBU 97/105,
also known as Sensor Fuzed Weapon (SFW). The SFW uses targeting sensors and sophisticated
algorithms, which enable this weapon to operate with only 40 smart Skeet™s to accomplish
its mission. Each smart Skeet™ contains two independent self-destruct features
- one based on altitude and the other based on time. In addition, a self-neutralization
feature utilizes a battery time-out, which shuts down all functions of the Skeet™
if no target is detected within minutes after its deployment. Once self-neutralized,
the Skeet™ poses no threat to civilians (first
hand account from EOD Specialist Bob Gravett). In contrast,
legacy cluster munitions indiscriminately place hundreds, even thousands of small
bomblets on the battlefield. Because they lack the technology to selectively target
a threat, legacy cluster munitions destroy everything within its impact area and
leave behind hundreds of armed bomblets.
At Textron Defense Systems, we are committed to minimizing
civilian losses during conflict and eliminating casualties
when the fighting is done. Our solutions are designed to meet
both the humanitarian needs and the war fighter's mission
requirements, demonstrating our commitment to a clean battlefield.
